A Carolina Beach woman was sentenced to more than five years in state prison after entering a guilty plea in connection with the shooting death of her sister at a town condo in April 2014.
Joyce Henry Goldberg, 56, pleaded guilty Monday in New Hanover County Superior Court to a charge of voluntary manslaughter, according to Assistant District Attorney Lillian Salcines-Bright. The charge was entered though an Alford plea in connection with the death of her sister, 58-year-old Glenda Henry Bordeaux, who was fatally shot at a condo at 600 Carolina Beach Ave. S. on April 1, 2014.
Goldberg was originally charged with second-degree murder in the case. She was indicted by a New Hanover County grand jury on charge of first-degree murder on July 14, 2014. As part of her plea agreement, the first-degree murder charge was dismissed by the state, according to court records.
In January 2015, a superior court judge ruled the defendant was incapable of standing trial and was committed to a psychiatric treatment facility, after she was examined by a forensic psychiatrist at Central Regional Hospital in Butner. A separate mental health evaluation was required to determine if Goldberg had the capacity to proceed with a trial in the case, according to the court order.
In the months following that hearing, a judge ruled she was competent to move forward in the case in August 2015, Salcines-Bright said. From that point forward, Salcines-Bright said she and Goldberg’s attorneys were in communications, which resulted in Monday’s voluntary manslaughter plea.
Attorneys James “Buddy” Allard and Thom Goolsby represented Goldberg in the case. She was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Phyllis Gorham to serve 64-89 months in the N.C. Department of Corrections.
