After an online survey on brick streets in Wilmington was posted in December, city officials are following that up with community meetings this week.

The city is looking for as much public input as possible regarding future maintenance of the historic streets. According to officials, suggestions and recommendations from residents will help city staff draft a policy to present to city council to “help determine how best to preserve the city’s brick streets.” The city does not intend to tear up the nearly four miles of brick roads that lie both exposed and unexposed underneath paved streets.

“We want this to be very comprehensive,” city spokeswoman Malissa Talbert said in December. “The goal is to create a standard policy for dealing with these streets.”

Signs have been posted around downtown to publicize the meetings, which will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Both public information meetings will be held in City Council Chambers at City Hall. The agenda will be the same for both sessions.
