Several Wilmington streets will be partially closed Tuesday and Wednesday for the removal of dead or dying trees.
According to the city, the 3800 block of Peachtree Avenue will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. while city workers remove a large, dead pine tree.
Workers from Davey Tree Expert Company will also be doing maintenance this week. They will be removing 24 trees that have been deemed public safety hazards due to their diseased or dead states.
Some city blocks will have to be shut down so the contractors can work safely, but the closures will be temporary and last just a few hours.
Trees are scheduled to be removed from the following addresses this week (subject to change due to weather or site conditions):
- 206 N. 5th Ave. (Bicentennial Park)
- 306 Anderson St.
- 1406 Chestnut St.
- 1721 Chestnut St.
- 1811 Chestnut St.
- 115 Borden Ave.
- 2021 Barnett Ave.
- 2103 Barnett Ave.
The work is part of an effort by the city to remove ailing trees that started a few years ago when the city identified 131 trees they deemed hazardous. Due to the number of trees needing maintenance, city council awarded a contract to Davey Tree Expert Company to help out city crews. According to the city, trees will removed in groups over several months so that not all the work is done at the same time.
