A community march for victims and survivors of domestic violence will take place in downtown Wilmington this Thursday.
The 26th Annual Take Back the Night march will begin at the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse at the corner of Princess and Third streets at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, according to Jennie Thomason, court advocate for Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc.
“The event strives to unite community members in an effort to raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence, while supporting and empowering survivors of domestic violence,” Thomason said.
The theme of this year’s march is “Seeking Justice…Finding Strength” to focus on the important role that the justice system plays in supporting and protecting survivors of domestic violence, Thomason said. The event is part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is held each year in October.
Wilmington survivors, friends, family and community members will march through the streets of downtown to raise awareness about domestic violence, followed by an empowering rally at the Historic Courthouse at 7:30 p.m.
District Attorney Ben David will be the event’s keynote speaker. Kim Ratcliff, local television news anchor, will be the emcee for the event. Special music will be provided by the UNC-Wilmington Seabelles and by guitarist Laura McLean. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of Port City Java.
Take Back the Night is a family-friendly event and will emphasize the ways the community can empower survivors of domestic violence.
