A Hoggard High School senior is in the running for some national recognition.
Jackson Hardee was recently selected to represent New Hanover County Schools as the 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholar nominee.
A member of Hoggard’s Adobe Academy, a career and technical education program centered on graphic design, Hardee has a strong interest in both visual and graphic arts. He is also a fourth year honors German language student. Jackson plans to attend NC State University.
As part of the annual Presidential Scholarship selection process, each school district in North Carolina selects one student. The state superintendent of schools will then select five students to represent North Carolina at the national level.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. The program was again extended last year to include students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.
Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
