An area organization and a local business have continued to show their support for Cape Fear Community College students.
Both Wilmington Riverfest, which organizes the annual downtown fall festival of the same name, and Alliance Credit Union recently contributed to college scholarships.
Earlier this month, the Riverfest planning committee gave a donation to CFCC’s Marine Technology program. The recipient of this year’s $5,000 scholarship is marine tech student Jenna Colthorp.
“Our students benefit from decades of support from Riverfest,” department chair Jason Rogers said. “Students like Jenna, who are academically outstanding, can now focus all of their efforts on school itself and not worry about the financial burden of how to pay for it.”
Each year, the Riverfest committee donates to the Riverfest/Ava M. Hobbs Endowed Scholarship, which has given more than $150,000 for CFCC students since its foundation.
“Hopefully next year we can give even more,” 2015 Riverfest chairman Chris Snowden noted.
And Alliance Credit Union has again funded a $1,000 scholarship, which will be available to a second-year business student in the fall 2015 semester. Eligible applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and live in New Hanover, Pender, or Brunswick County. To qualify, students must submit an essay describing their career goals and outlining their history of service and leadership in the community.
“As a current student at CFCC, I personally know how hard the struggle to pay for college can be. Being able to offer the business program scholarship goes hand in hand with our purpose at Alliance Credit Union–to help people in our communities prosper,” Kandra Romeo, Alliance business relationship manager, said.
CFCC students may apply for scholarships from the CFCC Foundation by visiting the college’s website.
