The Carolina Beach Town Council last night approved a conditional use permit for a project that would bring a Harris Teeter store to Pleasure Island.

Council members (minus Council Member Steve Shuttleworth, who was excused) unanimously voted to grant the permit to the applicant, BBM Associates of Raleigh, who is engineering the complex for Harris Teeter.

A public hearing occurred before the council held a discussion and took a vote. Only two members of the public, one representing Mona Black Marina and the other representing Federal Point Shopping Center, two adjacent properties, spoke during the hearing. They were both generally in favor of the project.

The council stressed they were voting only in terms of whether the project fit the guidelines for the permit, not based on their own personal opinions. However, none spoke negatively about the grocer’s plans.

“This is a significant development to come to Carolina Beach,” said Council Member Sarah Friede.

“I like the project,” added Mayor Pro Tem LeAnn Pierce. “I think it’s a great improvement to Carolina Beach.”

The big box grocery store would sit on a 7-acre property at 1000 and 1010 N. Lake Park Blvd. It would initially be a 53,288 square-foot space, with room for an additional 5,480 square-foot expansion. Unlike most other Harris Teeters, it would be a stand-alone store and feature a cafe, pharmacy with a drive-thru, and a separate on-site fuel center.
