New Hanover County
Detectives with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fatal shooting in the Myrtle Grove area.
The investigation began Monday when deputies were called to a home at 6514 Myrtle Grove Road just before 7:30 p.m., according to sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer.
The deceased–24-year-old Daryl Lee Joyner–did not live at the home, Brewer said. Detectives believe Joyner went to the home as the alleged aggressor when he was shot and killed, he added.
The homeowner, a 59-year-old man, was also injured in the incident. Brewer said the homeowner was the shooter.
Brewer said he could not comment further, citing the ongoing investigation. No charges have been filed in the case.

Wilmington
A 38-year-old man has been charged with driving while impaired in connection with a wreck that injured a woman and her two children Tuesday evening.

The wreck occurred at 800 Pine Grove Drive at 5:46 p.m., when a 2007 Chevy Tahoe rear-ended a Kia that was driven by a woman who had her 7-year-old daughter and an infant boy in the vehicle, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Linda Rawley.
The Tahoe was traveling at “a high rate of speed,” Rawley said. The crash forced the Kia off the road and caused the vehicle to turn over several times before landing on its roof.
The mother and her two children were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The driver of the Tahoe and two passengers were also taken to the hospital. The victims’ conditions were not available.
Kenyon Nevin Lofton, 38, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, felony serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving to endanger and driving while license revoked.
He was booked at the New Hanover County jail under a $105,000 secured bond.
Brunswick County

Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a Leland man in connection with an alleged assault on a teen.
Gerald Anthony Novarro, 65, of Jackey’s Creek Lane in Leland, was charged with simple assault Wednesday in connection with an assault on a 15-year-old boy in Jackey’s Creek area, according to sheriff’s office spokeswoman Emily Flax.
The incident was first reported by the sheriff’s office as a possible attempted kidnapping on Tuesday, when at about 3:45 p.m., an unknown man attempted to grab the teen while he was riding his skateboard down Jackey’s Creek Lane, Flax said. The boy was able to break free and joined a woman walking her dog. The man ran toward Kingsworth Lane and then left the area.
Upon investigation, detectives determined that the incident was “not an attempted kidnapping, but was in fact an assault,” Flax said. According to warrants, the teen was grabbed by his arm and sweatshirt.
“Sheriff John Ingram feels that it is extremely important to get information such as this out to the community as quickly as possible so that we are diligent in communicating potential dangers,” Flax said. ”We are grateful to be able to…inform the community that the incident was not an attempted kidnapping.”
Flax said the sheriff’s office would like to remind the community about the importance of teaching children about “stranger danger.”
“Knowing where children are at all times, encouraging them to play with others, setting limits of how far from home they are allowed to play, teaching them to recognize danger signs and follow their instincts, and to know that it is okay to say ‘no’ to an adult if they suspect danger, are all great tips for helping to keep children safe,” Flax said.
Novarro was booked into the Brunswick County Detention Facility under a $2,000 bond.
