‘Hawks for Hunger’ campaign to provide holiday meals for local families

Alumni and students who haven’t donated to UNCW this fiscal year have the chance to double the impact of their gift during November.

University Advancement is teaming up with several campus and community organizations for “Hawks for Hunger,” an initiative to provide local families with at least one holiday meal to enjoy, according to a notice from the university.

For every alumni or student who makes their first gift through Nov. 30, UNCW Campus Dining, Feast Down East and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina will donate a holiday meal to a local family in need. Donors can make a gift of any size to any area.

Children who attend Wilmington’s Residential Adolescent Achievement Place (WRAAP) and other families in need will benefit from the meal distribution on Dec.16.

“Feast Down East is very proud to be part of this campaign,” said Leslie Hossfeld, who chairs the UNCW Department of Sociology and Criminology and co-founded Food Down East. “Being good stewards of our region is the cornerstone of our mission and vision for Southeastern North Carolina.”

“We’ve always been inspired by the philanthropic spirit of our students and alumni, and their commitment to service,” said Eddie Stuart, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. “We hope this campaign resonates with those values while giving us a platform to show how gifts to UNCW help make community partnerships, service learning and other student experiences possible.”
