A resident was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after firefighters responded to a house fire Saturday at 406 S. Third St. in Wilmington.

Crews with the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a call received just before 6:45 a.m. Responders arrived to find heavy smoke and flames emanating from the three-story residence, according to a department spokesman.

The fire was brought under control and the scene was cleared by 9:15 a.m. The resident was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment of possible smoke inhalation. Two cats were also retrieved from the residence, but one did not survive.

Damage was estimated at more than $100,000, and an investigation into the cause was being conducted by the fire marshal’s office, the spokesman said. More information will be released as the investigation progresses.
