A year after they first appeared, downtown Wilmington’s “Taxi Only After Midnight” parking spots are getting fresh paint, the mark of a successful program, according to the city.

On blocks of Front Street, each side of Market Street, the reflective lettering went down starting in September 2012 to reserve after-midnight space for the taxis that work to clear the bar crowd.

“Reports from Parking staff and the Wilmington Police Department indicate that the markings are working as intended,” a bulletin from the city’s communication’s office said Tuesday.

The numbers: between July 1 and Sept. 30 of last year–just before the painted letters went down–802 taxi-stand tickets were issued. During the same period this year, there were only 87 issued, according to the city.

Staffers said the repainting in the first block of South Front Street finished last week and would be complete on the first block of North Front this week.

“Work will take place in early morning to minimize impact to businesses,” a notice said.
