WILMINGTON — Wilmington International Airport’s low-cost carrier, which launched its inaugural flight this summer, is extending routes on its schedule.

Starting Nov. 11, Avelo Airlines began offering a fourth destination from ILM. Travelers can take a direct flight to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on top of the other three nonstop destinations.

Originally, the FLL flight was intended to be a seasonal offering through April, but Avelo Airlines spokesperson Courtney Goff announced Monday flights will remain available through mid-June.

“Bookings are doing well, so we wanted to offer it for spring and early summer,” Goff said in a release.

When Avelo launched earlier this year, it had three nonstop destinations: Orlando, Baltimore and New Haven.

The route to Baltimore/Washington International Airport ran Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays through Labor Day. The destination is back on the schedule starting May 4 and will fly on Thursdays and Saturdays.

“We’ve seen an increased demand,” Goff wrote to Port City Daily of the BWI flight, “and due to our growing fleet, we are able to offer it from May 4 through mid-June as of now.”

Goff explained Avelo plans to extend its booking window in the next few weeks.

The route will only be offered two days, instead of three, due to fuel costs and wanting to first ensure the demand is there, Goff added.

“We don’t want to fly empty planes,” she wrote.

Yet she said there are more people than previously forecasted interested in flying to BWI, based on airport data.
