$1.8M lottery ticket claimed

A Raleigh man was still recovering from his family’s feast before realizing he had a winning Carolina Cash 5 ticket from the Thanksgiving Day drawing.

Matthew Huber of Raleigh won Cash 5’s third largest jackpot to date — $1,860,203.

“I had to check twice,” he said in a press release from the N.C. Education Lottery.

Huber logged onto the lottery’s website to buy the $1 Quick Pick ticket before heading to his family’s holiday gathering. It wasn’t until Friday morning he clicked on the lottery email alerting him of his win.

“It was mind blowing,” Huber said. “I called my wife over to look. It is something you never expect to see, but hope to see. It’s phenomenal, the best Thanksgiving.”

After tax withholdings, Huber took home $1.3 million, which he plans to invest and use to help others.

Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night; ticket sales make it possible for the lottery to raise $2.5 million a day on average for education.
