Man sentenced for rape, impregnating child

Cory Scott Ross

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — A man who was arrested for sexually assaulting and impregnating a 12-year-old pleaded guilty in a New Hanover County Superior Court Wednesday.

Cory Scott Ross will serve between 33 and 44 years in prison after being charged with multiple counts of statutory rape, statutory sex offense, incest, and taking indecent liberties with children.

The 29-year-old preyed upon a victim for four years, while living with her and her mother in both Pender and New Hanover counties, according to a press release from the district attorney’s office.

In summer 2020, the victim’s Hampstead pediatrician discovered she was pregnant after the mother took her daughter to the doctor upon complaints of stomach pain. Ross, who dated the mother, was at the appointment as well.

When the victim’s diagnosis was presented, he then tried to flee the scene. Law enforcement found him in Castle Hayne and arrested him.

The victim confirmed he had been abusing her for years.

Once Ross is released from prison, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. The victim was also granted a permanent no contact order, the DA noted in the release.

From 2013 to 2020, Ross had a string of run-ins with the law for drug possession, larceny and breaking and entering, in both New Hanover and Pender counties, along with probationary violations.
