Pedestrian struck by vehicle while walking on U.S. 17 in Leland

LELAND — A pedestrian walking on the road in the early hours Friday morning was struck by a vehicle in Leland near Village Road.

The Leland Police Department is investigating an accident that occurred at 5:40 a.m. when emergency officials responded to an area of U.S. 17 that a person was hit. The individual was transported by Brunswick County EMS to Novant Health Medical Center in Wilmington with serious injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows a person was walking north in the middle of a northbound lane on U.S. 17, toward Wilmington, when they were struck by a driver headed the same direction.

The person hit was wearing dark-colored clothing and it was dark and overcast at the time of the crash. At this time, no impairment is suspected by the driver and speed was not a factor in the collision.

The name of the individual injured is not being released at this time. Any developments on the investigation will be provided as they are released.
