Wilmington resident wins $819,879 in Cash 5 lotto

WILMINGTON — A $1 purchase for Jodie Smith of Wilmington, earned her great payoff. Smith won $819,879 on a Cash 5 ticket from a Nov. 17 drawing when all five of her numbers matched up.

She claimed her winnings Thursday at lottery headquarters, where she went home with $582,197 after federal and state tax withholdings.

Cash 5 tickets can be purchased for $1, either at a store or online. It’s one of four state lottery games where players have the option to use Online Play through the lottery’s website or the N.C. Lottery Official mobile app. Drawings are held every night. Thursday’s drawing offers a $464,000 jackpot.

Lottery ticket sales raise more than $900 million a year for education. In 2020, New Hanover County Schools received more than $11 million from lottery funds. The school system allocated the largest chunk, $6.5 million, to non-instructional support.

It also put $2 million toward facility construction; $1.5 million to provide 270 children with free pre-k programs; $558,876 was used for 531 scholarships; $267,043 went to 1,358 New Hanover County students for college grants; and $302,847 helped cover the cost of school transportation.

This article has been updated to correct the take-home amount. Previously it stated Smith received $612,167 after taxes.
