WPD says man who tried to flee was caught in possession of stolen gun, marijuana

WILMINGTON — Wilmington police were able to track down a suspect Wednesday after he allegedly dodged a traffic stop, flew through several stop signs and instigated a police chase. Once located, he was found in possession of a stolen gun and more than 234 grams of marijuana, WPD reported.

Tyrek Anderson, 23, is now being held in the detention center without bond and faces serval charges.

Around 5 p.m. Wednesday, WPD and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office units attempted to pull over Anderson’s vehicle. He then drove off, away from officers, according to WPD’s news release.

A pursuit was called off as rush hour traffic posed a safety risk, but patrol units were still able to follow Anderson’s path and locate the car unoccupied on South 22nd Street.

WPD says Anderson then attempted to flee on foot but officers caught up with him. The stolen gun was uncovered from nearby bushes and the marijuana was in his car.

Anderson’s charges include firearm by felon, possession of a stolen firearm, felony flee to elude and possession of illegal substances, among other violations.
