New Hanover schools announce 2022 Rookie of the Year

WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Downtown Rotary Club and New Hanover County Schools announced the 2022 Rookie of the Year: Forest Hills Global Elementary kindergarten teacher Mellissa Daria.

“We want the absolute best for our students, families, and community,” Daria said in a press release. “That success starts with taking care of and improving the retention of Beginning Teachers who serve the next generations to come. Our future is the little smiles that are hiding behind masks in our classrooms.”

For six years now, the school district and rotary have partnered to recognize an extraordinary new teacher. The honor is chosen based on hard work and diligence of beginning teachers within the area, with a goal to motivate and encourage leadership.

The Rookie of the Year program also strives to encourage teachers to continue their pursuit on the education path and offer opportunities to connect with others, share support and strategies.
