Man pleads guilty to car theft, high-speed car chase

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A 47-year-old Brunswick County man pleaded guilty in court Tuesday, Feb. 8, for his involvement in an April 2020 car theft and high-speed chase.

Jammie Joseph Skazenski was convicted of felony flee to elude arrest and felony larceny.

According to District Attorney Ben David’s office, on Apr. 9, 2020, Skazenski stole a Honda Civic from a gas station and engaged in a chase on I-140 in Brunswick County, after a sheriff’s deputy spotted him.

Skazenski drove in excess of 120 miles per hour, the DA’s office explained in a release. The pursuit ended in four-car crash in Wilmington, at North College Road and Ringo Drive. Skazenski, the deputy, and two civilian vehicles sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Wilmington Police Department’s special ops traffic unit led the investigation.

On Tuesday, Judge Thomas Wilson ordered Skazenski to serve 87 to 117 months in prison and pay restitution.

The DA’s office noted Skazenski as a habitual criminal, with multiple convictions for felony flee to elude, robbery, and shoplifting.

“The prosecution of career criminals will continue to be a top priority in our office, especially those who put innocent lives in danger on our streets and highways,” Kristi Severo, assistant DA, said in a release.
