Pender County giving away free smoke detectors

PENDER COUNTY — Don’t have a smoke detector in your home? Members of the Burgaw and Atkinson communities will be able to get the devices for free.

Pender County Emergency Management and nearby fire departments are partnering with the American Red Cross to give away the devices at no cost to residents.

Supplies are limited for now, but the county is expecting additional deliveries.

To request an alarm, call Pender County Emergency Management at 910-259-1210 or visit tinyurl.com/pendersmokealarms.

The smoke detectors do not require extra batteries. Families on limited or fixed incomes can receive help with installation.

“Smoke detectors save lives,” Pender County Fire Marshal Mark Haraway stated in a news release. “A working smoke detector is essential to protect you and your family – especially at night.”
