Pender schools cancels basketball due to Covid-19

PENDER COUNTY — Pender County Schools has canceled upcoming basketball games due to the current Covid-19 surge.

The district announced there are Covid-19 cases within the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs. Thus the varsity and junior varsity games on Wednesday, Jan. 19, against Dixon are called off.

The schools performed contact tracing and all close contacts have been informed.

The boys’ basketball program will pause all activities until the Pender County Health Department determines a return date.

Players who have been exposed on the girl’s team are excluded from practice and the upcoming game. The girls’ games are expected to resume Friday, Jan. 21, at West Columbus.

For the week ending Jan. 8 — the last time the school’s Covid-19 dashboard was updated — there were 22 school-based positive cases. However, the health department told the school board on Jan. 11, 444 students and 110 staff are at home (she did not use the word positive).

On Jan. 11, 95 kids had tested positive in the prior two days and 311 students were exposed.
