Man arrested for allegedly breaking into Leland businesses, stealing $2,700

LELAND — After numerous break-ins at local businesses, the Leland Police Department made an arrest Monday morning following another incident at McGee Market.

Joseph Canty Jr., 54, was taken into custody at his Leland home. He is accused of breaking into businesses in town and throughout the surrounding area in past weeks and stealing more than $2,700 in cash.

Canty is charged with seven counts of felony breaking and entering, six counts of larceny after breaking and entering, and four counts of injury to real property.

Leland police responded to an alarm activation at the McGee Market on Village Road around 10 a.m. Sunday. According to a news release from the town, the front door was smashed with a large rock upon arrival.

The crime scene reportedly matched similar incidents in businesses and shopping centers along Village Road, Reed Road and Olde Regent Way.

Leland detectives with the department’s criminal investigations division identified Canty as the suspect following a review of the security footage. Officers made the arrest with the assistance of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and Canty was transported to the Brunswick County Detention Center. He was held under a $100,000 secured bond.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Leland Police Department at 910-371-1100.
