Deadline approaching for Legal Aid NC’s free license-restoration services

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — New Hanover County residents that have a revoked or suspended driver’s license can get free help from Legal Aid NC to restore their privileges. The deadline to register is July 2. According to Legal Aid, 200 slots remain open.

“Not having a driver’s license is a big deal,” Sean Driscoll, a spokesperson for Legal Aid, said in a statement. “Not having a license can make it hard to find and keep a job, get your children to and from daycare or school, attend medical appointments, get groceries, etc.”

Individuals that sign up for the program will be required to attend to an event on Friday, August 20, in New Hanover County, to complete the restoration process.

Legal Aid staff will screen all callers to ensure they are eligible. The first 200 eligible callers will be asked to attend an event — sponsored by LINC, the NC Second Chance Alliance, the New Hanover and Pender County District Attorney’s Office, the New Hanover County Public Defender’s Office and Legal Aid of North Carolina — on Friday, August 20, in New Hanover County, where they will complete the restoration process.

The current campaign is part of Drive Forward NC to help low-income individuals. Registration can be done by calling Legal Aid at 1-866-219-5262 and dialing 2659 after hearing the greeting. The line is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., and will close off registration at 4 p.m. on July 2.
