NCDOT will replace Castle Hayne Road bridge this summer

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The North Carolina Department of Transportation have determined the Castle Hayne Road bridge that crosses Smith Creek will be permanently closed while they replace it with a modern structure.

The bridge closed last Friday after a container truck struck its steel truss, which was constructed in 1930. According to the NCDOT, the truss was up for replacement. On Monday crews inspected the bridge to assess repairs needed. The construction will begin this summer, and more details will be released on the contract, design and timeline as it becomes available.

NCDOT informed drivers to use N.C. 133 and MLK Parkway as a detour; traffic around the bridge may also be delayed as the future construction site is set up.
