NAACP scholarship applications open

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Three graduating seniors will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the local chapter of the NAACP. The scholarships will be granted according to students’ achievements academically, as well as involvement within the community and financial needs.

Applications are open to students looking to attend community college or a four-year university. Part of the process includes writing a statement about their educational and career goals, and informing about the contributions they have made to their communities.

Two character reference letters will be required, including from a teacher or guidance counselor, and another from a volunteer supervisor, coach, pastor, or even someone from the NAACP. The reference letter should also address how higher education will impact the student in reaching his or her career goals.

High-school transcripts (photocopies accepted) and information showing a financial need (Pell grants, FASFA) also will be required.

The completed application form must be received by April 30, 2021.
