Dirt-bike rider killed after fleeing from police

WILMINGTON — On Saturday, Mar. 13, a Wilmington Police Department officer attempted to stop 38-year-old Curtis Wheeler for riding his dirt bike on a sidewalk. Wheeler fled the scene, and rather than continuing on the sidewalk, he drove north on 10th Street.

According to WPD, a car took a left turn onto Orange Street and collided with the dirt biker, which sent Wheeler airborne. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Wheeler deceased; no one else was injured.

According to the WPD, Wheeler was driving over the speed limit ahead of the collision. An officer was not following him at the time of the incident.

No charges are expected currently.
