City celebrates Arbor Day by gifting 3,000 tree seedlings to community

WILMINGTON — The City of Wilmington will be celebrating Arbor Day on Monday, March 15, by gifting 3,000 tree seedlings to the community on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Folks interested in procuring 2-3-foot seedlings can go to Legion Sports Complex at 2149 Carolina Beach Road, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees must were a mask and remain 6 feet apart per Covid-19 protocols.

Each person can choose up to five seedlings from the following:

  • Bald cypress
  • Persimmon
  • River birch
  • Water tupelo
  • Overcup oak
  • White oak

The free trees are possible from Howard Penton’s donation in support of the Wilmington Tree Initiative. The initiative aims to grow the urban forest in the city by planting 1,739 trees. With support from the city, New Hanover County, Alliance for Cape Fear Trees and Cape Fear Community College, the initiative has planted 1,718 trees. It has given away 1,615 trees.
