Bicyclist pronounced dead after being hit by car on South College Road

WILMINGTON – A bicyclist hit by a car Tuesday night on South College Road has died.

Charles Bellamy, 57, was crossing the street at the time of the collision. According to witnesses, there were no marked crosswalk or stoplights in the area.

“Due to his dark clothing and the fact that it was nighttime, the driver was unable to see him,” according to a Wilmington Police Department news release. “No charges are expected.”

The department’s traffic unit responded to the 1000 block of South College Road in reference to the accident around 10:30 p.m.

The male victim was found in critical condition. According to police, officers attended while waiting for EMS. He was pronounced deceased on arrival at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

“We offer our deepest condolences to all affected by this tragic case,” the department stated.
