Wanna decorate a fiberglass owl? Airlie Gardens is calling for artists.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Annually, Airlie Gardens places decorated, painted and adorned fiberglass structures all across its historic gardens that have been given life and personality from local artists. They’ve featured gnomes, hearts, squirrels, and for 2021 they’re focusing on owls.

Artists are encouraged to apply to decorate one of 10 owls in “It’s Owl Good.” Folks can participate individually or in teams, and the owls will be on display from July through December 2021.

Interested parties must fill out an application by Mar. 15. The owls are 4-feet tall and all designs must be original, with judges choosing the top 10 based on creativity, craftsmanship, use of materials and outdoor sustainability and durability.

A $900 honorarium is given to each artist, along with the fiberglass, primed owls. Chosen artists will be able to pick up the owls in late April and will have to return them completed on June 30. The exhibit will open to the public on July 8.
