Untreated water discharge in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Recent rains that aided in settling the roadway near Carolina Shores, N.C., led to an 8-inch sewer force main failure, according to Brunswick County Public Utilities. As a result, untreated wastewater near 551 Calabash Road was discharged.

The sewer force main failed as it crossed a roadway drainage pipe and sanitary sewer leaked around midnight on Feb. 25; it was discovered at approximately 12:45 p.m. and isolated. The utility company completed its repair and had it back in service three hours later, around 4 p.m.

The break resulted in approximately 150,000 to 170,000 gallons being discharged, which flowed to the Caw Caw Drainage, a tributary to the Waccamaw River.
