WPD investigates homicide at Varsity Dr.

The brief was updated at 7:15 p.m. to reflect the official statement from authorities, who also revealed the victim’s name.

WILMINGTON—Wilmington Police Department announced the investigation into the death of a 20-year-old male, the 20th homicide of 2020.

The police released the victim’s name, Nasir Leonard, around 2 p.m. on Dec. 3.

Police Chief Donny Williams said in a press release: “I have one message for our community today: We have to stop the violence and we cannot do it alone. We know there are people out there who have information and we know there are people out there who are witnesses. We need you to come forward. Don’t leave justice in the hands of someone who’s going to continue this cycle of violence. Let our detectives do their jobs and get these perpetrators off the streets.

At 10:05 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, officers responded to shots fired in the 700 block of Varsity Dr. When police arrived, they found Leonard, who was then taken to NHRMC Emergency Room with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Of the 20 homicides that have taken place in Wilmington this year, six remain unsolved. Officials encourage the community to come forward and reveal any information they may have.

“To get justice in a courtroom we need witnesses to come forward,” District Attorney Ben David said in the press release. “Seeking retribution on the street creates a downward spiral that will only lead to more violence. We need the community’s help.”
