WILMINGTON — Plans are underway for a new hotel to break ground in the northern part of the county, roughly three miles from Wrightsville Beach.

Tru by Hilton at Mayfaire is currently moving through the city’s technical review committee. It’s being proposed at 1010 Ashes Drive near MegaCorp Logistics, in the vicinity of the Courtyard at Renaissance Park.

Shaunak Patel, president of Raleigh’s Parks Hospitality Group, is listed as the owner and developer of the 1.4 acres. PHG bought the land in August 2022 for $1.5 million according to county property records.

Patel’s hotel ownership and management company, founded by his father, Ramesh, has been building its 1,400-room portfolio in the South since 2008. It owns and operates numerous Hilton brands, including Homewood Suites, Doubletree, Hampton Inn and Suites, and Embassy Suites.

It has opened multiple Tru by Hiltons in Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina over the last year.

Tru is one of Hilton’s 18 brands, an economical and trendy accommodation facility. The hotel giant launched it in 2016 to compete against other hotels, Tru is one of Hilton’s 18 brands, an economical and trendy accommodation facility, such as Comfort Inn and La Quinta, that boast affordability.

According to site plans, Norris and Tunstall are the consulting engineers of the four-story hotel. It’s proposed at 45 feet, allowable in the office and institution-zoned  district.

The 60,000-square-foot property addition is located in the throes of Military Cutoff’s numerous shopping and dining options. It’s proposed to bring 46 vehicles during morning peak hours and 60 in the evening, adding to the 807 trip generation already in the area. The hotel will have 126 parking spaces.

Amenities for visitors include a build-your-own breakfast bar, fitness center, pool, and a 24/7 retail market. The rooms are smaller, yet have large windows to add natural light. The lobby is brightly decorated with clusters of lounge seating, including nooks to plug in and work, similar to the vibe of a coworking space.

Tru by Hilton is the second hotel announced for the Mayfaire area over the last four months. In October, a different group submitted plans for Element by Marriott, to be built at the vacant site of a former restaurant which closed in 2008. Located at 1055 International Drive, the six-story Marriott is an extended-stay model, with rooms outfitted with a fully equipped kitchen.

Four other hotels are located in the area, including Homewood Suites by Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn and Residence Inn by Marriott. Tru by Hilton, already booking online for mid-June, with rates starting at $149 a night for a king suite, will be located behind a SpringHill Suites by Marriott.
