Podcast Feb. 1 – Galleria land deal, DEQ budget cuts, Freeman Park

We kick off this week with a look back at a 2014 land swap that saw the former Galleria mall property change hands from Wrightsville Beach to Wilmington.

Why now? Well, the swap has actually been profitable for both municipalities for years — but this year, unless the Galleria project makes serious headway, the city will start losing money on the deal.

Next up: Taxpayers are going to have to pay to redesign a water main project in Shallotte. Then, they’re going to have to pay for it to be redesigned, again.

We break down what caused this and how exactly taxpayers ended up on the hook for the same project, twice.

Then, a look at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Funding and staffing for the DEQ has been cut by about a third over the last decade. The result? The agency’s ability to monitor, regulate, and enforce have been hampered. We get into how that has impacted the Wilmington area.

Last up, a trip to the beach, with a quick stop in Surf City and then a longer look at the latest on Freeman Park.
