BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The school children of Brunswick County now know when they will make up the four days they lost to Hurricane Matthew. The county’s Board of Education approved an updated school calendar on Tuesday and changes start as early as this month.
Overall, students need to make up four school days. Teachers need to make up three, because most either worked or took leave on Wednesday, Oct. 12, when the district re-opened schools, but held no classes because roads in some places were still unable to be traveled on.
The first change comes with the elimination of a half day on Oct. 28. A teacher workday on Jan. 23 will now be a full day of classes. Teachers will hold their workshops on June 15.
The Annual Leave Day previously set for Feb. 24 is now a full day for students, as is a teacher workday set for Feb. 27. That day will also be moved to June for teachers.
To round out the fourth day, another half day, this one set for March 31, is now a full day of school.
In releasing the schedule, the district noted the changes avoid using days around Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, as well as avoiding using days during spring break.
Saturdays were ruled out for multiple reasons, according to the district. Those include the requirement to pay overtime to some employees, as well as low attendance for students and staff.
