The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees has announced Isabelle Shepherd as its new executive director. Shepherd most recently served as development director and interim executive director at the Historic Wilmington Foundation.
Beforehand, Shepherd worked for WHQR Public Media and StepUp Wilmington.
Her new role will include managing operations, strategic planning, outreach activities, and events, in tandem with the alliance’s board of directors. Its mission is to advocate for tree protection, improve environmental equity, and educate citizens on proper tree planting protocols.
Shepherd will oversee its initiatives and community-driven solutions, also focusing on climate resiliency and equitable canopy coverage.
“Trees are essential to our community — cooling our streets, improving air quality, and fostering vibrant neighborhoods,” she said in a statement. “It is both humbling and inspiring to serve an organization so integral to the health and resilience of Wilmington and the surrounding region”
Shepherd replaces ED Dan Camacho, who served in the role for past year. According to the alliance, Camacho will continue to be active with the organization, particularly supporting its Tree Stewards program, which trains volunteers to routinely care for young trees and ensure their survival.
The alliance was will reach its decade anniversary in 2025 and to date has either planted or assisted with planting more than 3,000 trees citywide. It also distributes young trees to area residents and has given out 14,000 in its infancy.
