NEW HANOVER COUNTY — With a local shortage of Christmas trees and an uptick in demand for holiday decorations, it’s clear folks are escaping the pandemic reality in favor of a more cheerful mood.
The City of Wilmington and the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce are each hosting holiday light contests.
No more driving around dull neighborhoods looking for a little ritz — both contests include handy maps of participating homeowners.
In the City of Wilmington contest (entries are now closed), judging will take place through Dec. 17. The first-place winner will receive $100 and second place will get $50.

Update: Congratulations to the Wulf family for winning the 2020 competition!
As for Pleasure Island, the public will serve as judges.
Now through Dec. 21, viewers can cast a vote for their favorite display by texting 531-710-5927 with the associated house number, displayed on a sign in the front yard.
Local businesses are participating in the holiday decorating contest, too. To vote for your favorite business display, like an image from the event’s Facebook page.
