Heading into the final month of the regular season, college football players from the area are chipping in for their respective programs, while injuries and other incidents have kept certain athletes off the field.
Oklahoma State offensive lineman Larry Williams missed his second straight week due to injury. Laney alum Mike Sheehan is done for the season with a broken ankle at Catawba. Terry Caldwell has also been suspended from the Ole Miss football programs after a sideline incident last week during the Rebels matchup with LSU.
New Hanover
Caleb Fuller, Appalachian State: Appalachian State became bowl eligible this past Thursday as the Mountaineers went on the road and scored 34 unanswered points to win their ninth consecutive Sun Belt road game, 34-10, in a nationally televised matchup against Georgia Southern.
Appalachian State improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in Sun Belt Conference play, tied with Troy for top spot in the division. The Mountaineers held the Eagles to 159 total yards and without an offensive touchdown at home for only the second time ever.
Fuller received the start at defensive end and had one sack in the effort. In eight games played, the New Hanover alum has 13 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and two quarterback hurries.
Appalachian State returns to Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff with Texas State.
Ramone Simpson, North Carolina Central: North Carolina Central had the week off and received votes in the latest Football Championship Subdivision as winners of six straight. The Eagles head into a home game in Durham against Howard University on Saturday, Nov. 12, before playing in a nationally televised match-up against their rivals North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University on Nov. 19.
Simpson is the team’s leading rusher this season. He has a team-high 89 carries for 422 yards, averaging 4.7 yards per rush to go along with three touchdowns. Simpson is also fourth on the team with 14 catches for 225 yards receiving.
Ronnie Beatty, Averett University: Averett University football held off N.C. Wesleyan College for a 38-34 conference road victory on Saturday. Freshman Ronnie Beatty made his third start at defensive back in six games played and recorded his first career interception.
Beatty has 13 total tackles in his rookie season to go along with one pass deflection, one pass break up and 26 return yards following Saturday’s interception.

- Terry Caldwell, Ole Miss: Ole Miss put up 505 yards of total offense on Saturday night, but the Rebels came up just short in a 40-29 loss to No. 15 Auburn in front of 65,927 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

According to the Sun Herald of Biloxi, Mississippi “Ole Miss announced early in the game that Caldwell was suspended from the team indefinitely. The senior linebacker was sent off the field during the Rebels’ 38-21 loss at LSU last week after a blowup with teammates on the sideline.
Coach High Freeze met with Caldwell this past Monday leading up to the contest with Auburn, leading to his suspension. Caldwell was seen headed to the Rebels’ locker room against LSU as caught by ESPN cameras. ESPN reported Caldwell was involved in a sideline incident.
He started three of Ole Miss’ seven games and was third on the team with 32 tackles.
- Julius Reynolds, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University: North Carolina A&T is listed just outside the top-10 in this week’s Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Top 25 poll. The Aggies won their sixth straight on Saturday following a 42-17 result against Florida A&M.
Reynolds had one tackle in the win. The sophomore has 19 total tackles in six games this season, with 1.5 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery.
- Hunter Louthan, Davidson College: Davidson fell to Jacksonville in Pioneer Football League action Saturday at Richardson Stadium, 35-17. With the loss, Davidson falls to 2-7 overall and 0-6 in the PFL.
Louthan had one catches for 11 yards. The true freshman tight end has at least one catch in 7-of-9 games, totaling 12 receptions for 131 yards and one touchdown.
