The Coastal Christian boys soccer team played in its second consecutive overtime contest on Saturday afternoon, but unlike earlier in the week the Centurions were unable to pull out the dramatic result. Asheville Christian Academy handed the Wilmington side a heartbreaking season ending setback 2-1 in the 2A North Carolina High School Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) 2A Championship.
Making its first ever appearance in a NCISAA 2A title game, Coastal Christian saw its 12-match win streak snap, closing a memorable run this season at 22-3-1 overall.
The Centurions went ahead twice in the match. Leading goal scorer Douglas McKinney struck first when the senior put Coastal Christian on the board in the 29th minute off an assist from Matt Ward.
With a 1-0 advantage at the break, Asheville Christian equalized in the 55th minute as scored remained level heading into overtime.
Ward and McKinney hooked up again three minutes into extra time to put the Centurions in front. This time Ward found the back of the net on the assist from McKinney, but Asheville Christian squared things at two goals apiece in the 89th minute before finding the game-winner during the second 10-minute overtime period.

Volleyball Third Round N.C. High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Playoffs
No.1 Green Hope 3 No. 4 Hoggard 0

Playing in its first road game of the postseason, fourth-seeded Hoggard saw their season come to an end on Saturday as No. 1 Green Hope handed the Vikings a 3-1 setback in the third round of the 4A state playoffs.
Hoggard was in every game of the afternoon, but couldn’t get over the top against the number one ranked team in the east region of the 4A North Carolina High School Athletic Association bracket.
A late comeback from the Vikings tied the first set on four occasions, but Green Hope hung on to win the set, 25-23. Hoggard stormed back and led for most of the second game to level the match with a 25-21 result, but the Vikings were out of sorts in set number three as unforced errors allowed Green Hope to grab a 2-1 lead in the best of five match.
Hoggard was down but not out as the Vikings were tied 19-19 in the final set, but Green Hope went on a 6-1 run to lift the home team from Cary to a 25-20 win to take the match, 3-1, and advance to the final eight in the state.
Hoggard closed the year at 21-6 overall.

Volleyball 2A State Championship
Wilmington Christian 3 Greenville Christian 0
(25-10, 25-15, 20-6)
The Patriots went on an 8-0 run during the opening set and Wilmington Christian never looked back to capture its fourth consecutive NCCSA 2A Championship following a 3-0 sweep against Greenville Christian.
Ellie Kohl guided the Patriots to a 25-10 result in the opening game. Wilmington Christian took game two, 25-15, and completed the perfect week with a result to clinch the result.
Wilmington Christian finished the year with a 29-4 overall mark.
Soccer 2A State Championship
Wilmington Christian 1 Alamance Christian 1 (4-2)
Wilmington Christian Academy made it a clean sweep of this years NCCSA Championships as the Patriots rallied late to equalize and outscored Alamanace Christian 4-2 in penalties to claim the 2A Title.
