New Hanover 46 Topsail 17
New Hanover put up over 500 yards of total offense and used a pair of defense touchdowns, cruising to a 46-17 win against Topsail on Friday night.
Sophomore quarterback Blake Walston went 11-of-20 through the air for 279 yards and two touchdowns, while Francis Meehan added a touchdown pass early in the second quarter on a 32 yard strike to Lamont Howard.
The Wildcats led 27-10 at the half with 255 passing yards and 119 rushing yards through 24 minutes of play. A 58-yard screen pass from Walston to Keegan Santos put New Hanover on the board before Meehan hit Howard for the score.
Jorge Gonzales connected on a field goal just before the half to bring Topsail to within nine, 19-10, but New Hanover’s quick strike offense responded as Walston’s second touchdown pass of the game found Jyree Taylor on a 55-yard score to make it 27-10 moving into the third quarter.
Savyor Cromartie added a scoop and score on defense, while Javeon Hall made a 54-yard trip to the end zone on Walston’s third touchdown pass of the game during the fourth quarter. Wiz Vaughn added two scores, totaling five rushes for 86 yards. Seven different players recorded at least one catch on the night. Santos added seven carries for 52 yards, and Freddie Taylor made two grabs for 35 yards.
With West Brunswick’s setback, New Hanover is in line to earn top spot in the division at 4-1 in the division and 6-4 overall. The Wildcats play South Brunswick in the regular season finale at Legion Stadium on Friday, Nov. 4.
