This week’s edition of the New Hanover County Schools TV-produced ‘Sports Round Table’ features a pair of guests from the Laney football program along with highlights from Hoggard’s 34-26 win over West Brunswick and New Hanover’s 43-0 shutout against Ashley.
Coming off a bye week at 2-2 in the division and 5-4 overall, Laney prepares for a road game in Shallotte on Friday. Senior running back Imeek Watkins and offensive tackle Jackson Mitchell joined host Joe Cats to break down the season up to this point. Through nine games, Watkins has rushed for 1,171 yards and 10 touchdowns. The four-year varsity starter gave high praise to his offensive line, including Mitchell, who talked about the key to success moving into the game at West Brunswick.

Big plays on offense and defense propelled New Hanover to last week’s win. Senior Jahann Simmons had a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown, while Malcolm Hill caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Blake Walston. Francis Meehan was also involved in the attack with a pair of scores, including a seven-yard touchdown to Wiz Vaughn. New Hanover Coach Earl Smith goes over the highlights and talked about his team’s confidence moving through the final few weeks of the regular season.
Hoggard was firing on all cylinders during an impressive Homecoming win against the Trojans. Josh Jones accounted for four total touchdowns, connected on 14-of-21 pass attempts for over 200 yards in the air. The Vikings’ defense forced three turnovers in the result, while Jeremiah Kim converted a pair of field goal attempts.
