New Hanover soccer earns late result against Hoggard (video)

New Hanover 2    Hoggard 1

The New Hanover soccer team took one step closer to clinching at least a share of this year’s Mideastern Conference Title as the Wildcats used a late goal from Tenneysan Wenk to pull out a 2-1 result against Hoggard.

New Hanover midfielder Declan Payne broke a scoreless match in the 50th minute as the senior sent a left-footed strike just after the break off a deflection and into the back of the net to grab a regular season sweep over its crosstown rivals.

Soon after, Hoggard was issued a red card and played a man down for the final half hour of the match, but the Vikings equalized when Cesar Cruz flicked a pass to Andrew Robinson to level score one-all in the 67th minute.

While it looked as if the match was headed into extra time, Wenk put away a deep throw-in from Jesse Wyatt with 90 seconds remaining in regulation for the go ahead goal. Roman Lewis made eight saves at keeper for the Wildcats.

With the win, New Hanover improved to 9-1-1 in league play and 15-3-1 overall. The Wildcats have one game left against Topsail on Thursday. A win would either give the Wildcats a share of the division crown with Ashley (8-1-1, 11-3-2) or earn the championship outright. The final result will depend on Thursday’s regular season finale between Hoggard (6-3, 11-6) and the Screaming Eagles.
