North Brunswick 21 Dixon 6
For the second straight week, the North Brunswick football team found itself trailing in the first quarter. But, for the second straight week, the North Brunswick football team responded; the Scorpions ran off 21 unanswered points in a 21-6 victory in Leland.
A 52 yard touchdown run in the opening frame put Dixon ahead until Jayhlen Washington broke a long run and used a Michael Rivers extra point to give North Brunswick a lead it would not relinquish. The Scorpions picked up a fumble recovery in the second quarter and scored one play later to go up by seven, while a touchdown late in the first half capped the scoring.
North Brunswick moved to 3-0 in the East Central Conference and 7-2 overall.
Topsail 51 South Brunswick 7
The Pirates didn’t get much practice time during the open week due to school closures in Pender County, but Topsail got back to work over the past few days and used its ground game to run past South Brunswick 51-7 on Friday night.
Freshman Noah Lavalle continued his impressive first season for the black and gold by making several plays through the air. He caught a 55 yard pass from Jacob Floyd midway through the opening frame to set up Floyd’s 5-yard touchdown run to give the Pirates a 7-0 advantage.
Lavalle made another 50-plus yard reception later in the game and scored on the ground. Hayden Walsh added a pair of touchdowns late, while Josh Smith crossed the goal line from three yards out. Jorge Gonzales also connected on a 35-yard field goal for Topsail, who moved to 2-2 in conference and 4-5 on the year.
Trailing 17-0, Josh Carter, put South Brunswick on the board with under four minutes to go in the half. The Cougars fell to 0-5 in the division and 1-9 overall.
Topsail plays host to New Hanover on Friday, Oct. 28. South Brunswick has the week off.
