South Brunswick (0-3, 1-7) at Ashley (0-3, 2-4)
Something’s got to give in Monkey Junction on Friday night as two struggling football teams hit the field in search of their first win inside conference play.
Ashley let a 21-point first half lead slip away last week and the team continues to deal with several key injuries on both sides of the ball. In the preview leading up to the Topsail game, a 28-24 defeat last Thursday, the Screaming Eagles were looking for some playmakers to step up.
Freddie Thames and Corey Whaley did just that after exploding for big plays early against the Pirates. Thames broke a pair of tackles and went 80 yards for a touchdown. Whaley caught a 68 yard touchdown from Jacob Reed, but costly penalties and the inability to get off the field on defense hurt the Screaming Eagles down the stretch.
South Brunswick hasn’t tasted victory since week one of the regular season and teams continue to key on standout running back Josh Carter. Carter has 132 carries for 777 yards and six touchdowns this season. Sophomore Mason Phillips is making improvements at quarterback and this could be the week the Cougars get going on offense.
North Brunswick (2-0, 5-2) at Southwest Onslow (0-1, 4-3)
Even in their two setbacks this season, North Brunswick has been in every game and the Scorpions face a big road game on Friday night with a trip to Onslow County for a date with Southwest Onslow.
Shaquan Graham was able to find the end zone in last week’s win over Croatan. Mix in the athleticism of Jc Smith and quarterback Jathan Deberry, North Brunswick has several big playmakers on offense.
Defensively, the Scorpions held Croatan to just 12 points thanks to a big second half effort. Brisson Hibbert stepped up for North Brunswick along with an improving special teams’ game. Michael Rivers has also proved to be a valuable asset on field goal tries in addition to kick offs.
