Hoggard volleyball, soccer lead league; New Hanover soccer snaps Ashley’s win streak

Declan Payne scored from the penalty spot in the first half to guide New Hanover in a crucial 1-nil result against Ashley. The senior midfielder notched his sixth score this season, snapping the Screaming Eagles five-game win streak. Goal keeper Roman Lewis made six saves for the shutout.

New Hanover stands at 2-1 in the division and 8-3 overall. Ashley falls to 4-1 in conference and 6-3-1 on the year.

Hoggard 9    West Brunswick 0

The Vikings continued their impressive run through the conference slate Tuesday following a 9-0 shutout in Shallotte over West Brunswick. Hoggard is unbeaten at 3-0 in league play heading into a key match with New Hanover (2-1, 8-4) on Thursday.

Andrew Robinson had a pair of goals before the break and Cesar Cruz made it a three score lead after 40 minutes of play. The Vikings scored six more times in the second half to move to 7-2 overall. With Tuesday’s loss by Ashley, Hoggard moves into first place in conference.

Coastal Christian 9     Fayetteville Christian 0

Douglas McKinney notched two goals in the opening 25 minutes to guide Coastal Christian to a 9-0 win as seven different players tallied for the Centurions. Tommy Murphy, Walker Henderson, Ian Boyd, Ty Lewis, Tafari Croom and Allen Amicy all found the back of the net.

Coastal Christian moved to 14-2-1 overall and remain one game behind Fayetteville Academy for top spot in the Coastal Rivers Conference.

Hoggard continued to roll through the conference on Tuesday with a 3-1 sweep at West Brunswick.

The Vikings have dropped just three sets to conference opponents through seven matches this season, extending its streak of consecutive wins to 45 inside league play.

Paige Corrigan had a team-high eight kills. Senior libero Madie Schider finished with 19 digs, while setters Camille Whitlock and Samantha Shuffler combined for 39 assists. Brianna Hamilton and Julianna Askew added seven kills each in the attack.

New Hanover 3   Ashley 0

(27-25, 25-17, 25-14)

The Wildcats earned a season sweep over Ashley following a 3-0 on Tuesday. Liza McLatchy paced the attack with 15 kills and .452 hitting percentage. Senior setter Courtney Loughran recorded 34 assists.

New Hanover improved to 4-3 in the division and 8-4 overall. Ashley dropped to 3-5 in conference and 10-7 this season.

Topsail 3    South Brunswick 1

(22-25, 25-18-, 25-18, 25-18)

Topsail overcame a slow start to win in four against South Brunswick on Tuesday. Selena Biele and Victoria Elder combined for 24 kills, while Biele chipped in with 23 digs. Kayle Kyle recorded 21 assists and Angelica Biele played a role at setter with 14 assists.

East Duplin 3    North Brunswick 0 

Coastal Christian 3     Fayetteville Christian 0

(25-8, 25-21, 25-14)

Coastal Christian grabbed a 3-0 sweep over Fayetteville Christian.  Setter Anna Grace Holdford controlled the passing game with 36 assists. Julia Masters put down 14 kills and Callie Weaver had 18 digs. Anna Dudley Wetherhill shined from the service line with a team-high four aces.   The Centurions are 15-1 in conference play and 16-2 overall.
