New Hanover 1 Coastal Christian 0
The Wildcats used a 30-yard blast from Declan Payne off a free kick opportunity in the 11th minute and held off a feisty Coastal Christian side for a 1-nil result at Legion Stadium on Tuesday night.
“Coastal Christian is probably the toughest team we’ve faced so far this season,” said New Hanover Coach T.J. Rennie. “I thought we settled in throughout the second half and limited the chances. Declan’s goal impressive and I think we’re a little bit further along than where we were at this point last year. There’s still a long way to go, but happy with tonight’s result.”
Coastal Christian had more scoring opportunities during the first half and controlled the run of play, but could not convert as the Centurions used a good effort by sophomore Walker Henderson to get into the box off a Douglas McKinney touch. The shot was ripped left of frame, while Henderson nearly connected late in the opening frame with a low screaming strike.
Roman Lewis and Hunter Mintz each had big saves throughout the final 40 minutes of action to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
“We’ve played just about as well as you can through the first six games and were finding the back of the net on a lot of situations where we couldn’t get that goal tonight,” said Coastal Christian Coach Mike Scheffel. “We have an experienced group and we schedule these games against New Hanover and Ashley on Thursday for the intensity.”
New Hanover moved to 6-0-0 overall. Coastal Christian suffered its first setback of the season, dropping to 6-1-0 on the year.
Laney 6 Richlands 1
Laney got back in the win column following a 6-1 result at Richlands. Tristan Nelson tallied twice with one assist to pace the Bucs attack. Four other were on the scoring sheet, including Simon Daughtry, Jackson Herren, Logan Acuna and J.P. Felix. Laney moved to 3-2 on the young season.
Cape Fear Academy 4 Wilmington Christian 1
Zach Tomosunas had one goal and two assists to lead Cape Fear Academy in a 4-1 win over Wilmington Christian. Holt Robison, Luke Marushack and Bennett Dahl also found the back of the net for the Hurricanes, who improved to 6-2 overall.

Dixon 4 Topsail 2
Richie Tarter and Dawson Asbury recorded goals for Topsail in a 4-2 setback against Dixon. Jorge Lopez made nine saves for the Pirates, while Ethan Borkowski and Devin Schmitz picked up an assist.
Volleyball
Six of the seven teams within the Mideastern Conference opened league play on Tuesday as Laney and Hoggard earned straight set victories. West Brunswick was up two games to none before Ashley came storming back, but the Trojans responded with a 15-10 win in the decisive fifth set tiebreaker. North Brunswick also cruised to a 3-0 win against Trask.

After grabbing a three-point result in game one, Laney rode the momentum to a victory against Topsail. Daylene Thompson was consistent in the passing game with 26 assists, while Hannah Freas and Anna Morgan had seven kills apiece.

Kaylee Scoggins put in an all-around effort with 10 kills and 10 digs to lead North Brunswick. Trask had trouble responding to the service game as the Scorpions closed with 15 aces. Aliah Johnson had 18 assists at setter.

Golf
Caroline Cahill post a four-over-par, 76, on Tuesday as the Laney golf team dominated the opening match of the season on the 5,223 yard layout at the Member’s Course on St. James Plantation. Jayla Rogers followed with a runner-up performance by posting an 83.
After hitting 40 on the front nine, Cahill shaved four strokes over her score after the turn as the only golfer to break 80 on the day. Anna Moore paced Hoggard with an 87.
