WILMINGTON – For a while on Saturday, it looked like the Wilmington Hammerheads FC would break its nine-game losing streak with a win at home. But, it was not to be.
Playing at Legion Stadium Saturday in front of more than 2,900 fans, the home team tied the Rochester Rhinos 2-2 after taking its first of two leads 36 minutes into the game with a goal from Justin Moore.
Moore’s tally came from the right side, where Kyle Parker put the ball in position for Moore just outside the box. It was Moose’s first goal of the season and Parker’s second assist of the campaign.
The 77th minute, however came with an equalizer from the foot of Rhino Christian Volesky.
With an assist from Casey Townsend, Bruno Perone found the net early in second-half stoppage time, giving the Hammerheads one more chance at a win. But it was Rhino Wal Fall’s stoppage-time header off of a corner kick sequence that gave the Rhinos their seventh consecutive draw on the road.
The Rhinos move to 10-5-11 (41 points) overall and 2-3-8 on the road. The next play Sept. 3 in at Charleston Battery.
With the draw, the Hammerheads fared better than the last time these two teams played on Aug. 6. That game in Rochester ended with a 2-0 Rhino win. But the tie leaves the Hammerheads at 6-11-8 (26 points) overall and 3-4-5 at home with the season soon coming to a close.
The Hammerheads head to Montreal for a game at the Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard on Aug. 31.
