WILMINGTON- A rivalry match between two familiar sides played out to perfection on Saturday night as Wilmington Hammerheads FC and Charleston Battery ended in a 1-1 draw at Legion Stadium.
The Hammerheads played far better than they had of late, but the end result was another big blow to their hopes of reaching the playoffs. With seven games to go, and now a six-point deficit to make up on eighth-place Orlando City B, time is fast running out for Wilmington.

The game was chippy affair in the first half and, once the teams settled down, there were some very bright passages of play from both clubs.
Wilmington took the lead with 10 minutes to go in the first half when a free kick by Michael Binns took a deflection off the defensive wall and found the left corner of the net, but Charleston hit back with an outstanding goal by O’Brian Woodbine from 30 yards in stoppage time to leave it level at the break.
With the scored tied at one moving into the final 45 minutes of action, each side came close to finding the game-winner, but big defensive plays by Wilmington’s Ashani Fairclough and Charleston’s Forrest Lasso kept the game all square moving into the final stages of the match.
Wilmington goalkeeper Eric Ati also made a big save with four minutes to go to deny Quinton Griffith’s header from a corner.
Woodbine was named Man of the Match with a positive overall performance and equalizer to take the wind out of the 3,500 fans at Legion Stadium.
Wilmington (6-10-7) hits the road for a midweek match against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Aug. 24. Charleston Battery returns to MUSC Health Stadium for a date with Charleston Battery on Aug. 27.
