UNCW cross country/track and field standout Meredith Bozzi has been nominated for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award following an outstanding senior season.
Presented for the 26th year, the elite award administered by the governing body of collegiate athletics recognizes a student-athlete that exemplifies its long-established hallmarks of academics, athletics, service and leadership.
Overall, a record 517 nominees are on the 2015-16 ballot, including 231 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, 117 from Division II and 169 from Division III.
“Meredith represents all that is good about college athletics,” said UNCW Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass. “We’re honored to nominate her for this award. She was terrific on the track and didn’t slow down in the classroom. On top of that, she was dedicated to making Wilmington a better place by sharing her talents in the community.”
Bozzi, a native of Basking Ridge, N.J., recently capped her career by competing in the preliminary round of the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Jacksonville, Fla. In early May, Bozzi became the first Seahawk woman to win the 800 meters at the CAA Championships with a time of 2:09.79, beating out Northeastern’s Corrine Myers at 2:11.44.
Bozzi earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science and graduated summa cum laude after posting a 3.89 grade point average.
On the oval, the team captain holds six school records and set new marks this year in the Indoor 1,000 meters, Outdoor 800 meters and Outdoor 4×800 relay. She served as vice-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), was a Student Government Association representative and contributed more than 80 hours of community service.
Bozzi is one of six CAA student-athletes who have been nominated. She is joined by Caroline Casey (William & Mary), Kendall Coyne (Northeastern), Jailyn Ford (James Madison), Katie Hillman (Delaware) and Amira Idris (Delaware).
