Diamond Hawks extend winning streak to 12 with series sweep against Towson

Nick Feight belted two home runs and starter Cory Gantz held Towson in check as UNCW erupted for 10 runs over the middle three innings on its way to an 11-4 win at Brooks Field on Sunday to complete a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep.

UNCW posted its second straight sweep in conference play to improve to 8-2 in the circuit and 27-9 overall. The Seahawks hold the nation’s longest winning streak at 12 games, while also setting a new program record with their 13th consecutive home win.

Feight, who raised his season batting average to .397, homered in the second make it a 2-1 deficit and added a two-run shot in the sixth for his 15th on the season. With those three RBI’s, he now leads the nation with 68.

The Seahawks took advantage of four Towson walks and added RBI doubles by Casey Golden and Joe Bertone to plate five runs and snap a two-all deadlock.

Golden posted his fourth three-hit game of the season, while Bertone and Gavin Stupienski added two hits apiece. Bertone knocked in two runs with a pinch hit double in the fifth inning.

Gantz (3-0) was the beneficiary of the mid-game offensive explosion, picking up his third win of the season. The right-hander allowed two runs in the first inning before tossing five no-hit, shutout innings. He finished with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Leland native Steven Linkous had his hit streak halted at 17 games and former Topsail High School standout Clark Cota went 1-for-2 at the plate as UNCW’s designated hitter.

The Seahawks visit North Carolina in the first of a home-and-home series on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m
