Do you have what it takes to be a Super Girl? School-aged girls are invited to participate in the Port City Super Girls 5K Challenge in April.
The Wilmington Police Department is supporting the Super Girls 5K Challenge, hosted by Step Up for Soldiers, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 16 at the National Guard Armory at 2412 Infantry Road in Wilmington, according to police department spokeswoman Linda Rawley.
Super Girls was created by the Wilmington Police Department to empower school-aged girls and promote positive choices, Rawley said. The 5K challenge is the second Super Girls event. The police department’s Super Girls movement kicked off in January with an empowering speaker event at Cape Fear Community College’s Union Station Building.
“Each year we notice an increase in the number of girls who become involved in violent street gangs and we want to help change that,” Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said. “We…look forward to encouraging these young women to aim for the stars.”
Registration for the April 5K event is open until April 11, Rawley said. The Super Girls event is free and open for girls, ages 12 to 18.
Those who wish to participate can register in person at the Independence Mall Center Court, 3500 Oleander Drive, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., April 2, Rawley said. Girls and guardians can stop by and sign up for the event and get info about Super Girls. Registration is also available online. (Click here for the online registration form.)
